Passaic Valley Sewerage Commission (PVSC) is a state-established utility agency created in 1902 to reduce pollution in the Passaic River and its tributaries. Based in Newark, New Jersey, it serves a broad portion of northern New Jersey, spanning parts of five counties and 48 municipalities with about 1.4 million residents and an influent capacity of roughly 330 MGD. The agency handles the conveyance, treatment and pollution abatement of wastewater within its service area. PVSC's essential infrastructure includes a main intercepting sewer of about 22 miles, 18 miles of branch intercepting sewers, and a 12-foot-diameter ocean outfall terminating at Robins Reef in New York Harbor. It also operates field pumping stations and oversees roughly 2,000 miles of lateral sewers owned by contributing towns, enabling the collection and flow of inflow to treatment facilities. Within the utilities sector, PVSC serves municipal customers by managing wastewater services and river pollution control in its region.
