PAWS Chicago is a mid-sized nonprofit based in Chicago, Illinois, and ranks among the nation’s largest comprehensive No Kill animal welfare organizations, focused on ending the killing of homeless pets through a range of programs. Its Medical Center serves more than 27,000 homeless and at-risk cats and dogs each year, while its adoption program connects thousands with loving homes and the organization rehabilitates more than 5,000 sick or injured animals annually. It also runs the city’s only high-volume spay/neuter clinic, performing over 21,000 low- or no-cost surgeries in the most recent year reported, addressing pet overpopulation and expanding access to care in under-resourced communities. Founded in 1997, PAWS Chicago has played a leading role in reducing homeless pet euthanasia rates in Chicago, with a reported 88.8% decline since its founding. The nonprofit has earned Charity Navigator’s highest 4-star rating every year since 2003, reflecting long-standing transparency and prudent financial stewardship. In addition to services, PAWS Chicago offers opportunities for adoption, volunteering, fostering, and donating, and in 2025 it was named Best Pet Adoption or Animal Shelter in the Chicago Reader’s Best of Chicago poll.
