PETA is a large nonprofit organization based in Norfolk, Virginia, with a global network of supporters. It concentrates its advocacy on four areas where animals suffer most intensely—laboratories, the food industry, the clothing trade, and the entertainment sector—along with other forms of cruelty affecting rodents, birds, and domesticated animals. The organization pursues public education, cruelty investigations, research, animal rescue, legislation, special events, celebrity involvement, and protest campaigns to advance its mission.

The PETA Foundation was founded in 1993 to support PETA's operations; the two entities are separate but work closely together. In June 2025, PETA participated in Chicago River Day, illustrating ongoing public engagement and advocacy.
