PEN America sits at the intersection of literature and human rights, working to protect open expression in the United States and worldwide. The organization champions the freedom to write and believes the written word can transform society. It is the largest center within PEN International and has collaborated for more than 90 years with the international PEN community to ensure people can create literature, share information, express views, and access others' ideas and works. Its mission is to unite writers and their allies to celebrate creative expression and defend the liberties that enable it. 
PEN America is based in New York City, New York. In December 2025, the organization, in partnership with Bard College, announced the launch of Kronika, a digital platform designed to safeguard journalism globally and ensure the historical record cannot be obliterated by censorship.
