People for Urban Progress is a small Indianapolis-based nonprofit focused on advancing civic sustainability through design-led initiatives. It develops products and projects that emphasize connectivity, responsible reuse, and making, with the goal of a smarter, more resilient city that leverages existing resources. The organization frames sustainability as rethinking waste and how urban assets are used, rather than relying solely on traditional green technologies. Founded in 2008 by two residents who wanted to improve Indianapolis's urban experience, PUP began by reclaiming roof materials from the RCA Hoosier Dome and funding its work through early product sales. Its activities have included notable partnerships, such as an Amtrak collaboration in 2018 to repurpose leather seat covers from Acela trains and a 2023 effort with Hamilton County Tourism to extend the life of public banners. The nonprofit role includes stewarding public spaces and connecting residents, public institutions, and designers to address urban challenges with creativity and integrity.
