PersonalGenomes.org is a small Boston-based nonprofit operating in the research services space. The organization runs three main initiatives: Open Humans, the Global Network of Personal Genome Projects, and the Genomes, Environments and Traits Conference. The Global Network of Personal Genome Projects, launched in 2005 by Harvard Medical School professor George Church, is described as the first open-source public health project and aims to assemble a large, publicly accessible dataset of human genetic, environmental, and trait information contributed by volunteers worldwide. Open Humans connects researchers and participants who want to share data to advance human health, while the GET Conference serves as a forum for discussion among researchers, industry participants, and public and government bodies about the implications of new genomic technologies and related ethical, legal, and social issues.
