Playwrights Project is a San Diego–based nonprofit in the performing arts that focuses on arts education through theatre. It empowers people of diverse ages and backgrounds to voice their stories, aiming to foster individual growth and strengthen community connections through its writing programs and productions. The organization engages underserved youth and adults, including individuals facing poverty, homelessness, foster care, immigration, substance use disorders, involvement with the justice system, and military experience, with programs that emphasize writing, communication, and social-emotional learning. Since its founding in 1985, Playwrights Project has grown to reach thousands of students annually, operates an annual theatre festival, and runs rehabilitative playwriting in correctional facilities and reentry sites, reflecting its commitment to making theatre education accessible across multiple community settings. A core part of its activity involves partnerships with local schools and community organizations, and it engages a broad network of working artists to deliver its programs and productions.
