The National Policing Institute, formerly the National Police Foundation, is a national nonprofit organization in the law enforcement sector based in Washington, DC. Founded more than four decades ago with ties to the Ford Foundation and the President’s Commission on the Challenge of Crime in a Free Society, it focuses on improving policing through science and innovation in a non-partisan, non-membership-driven framework. Its work combines in-house staff, executive and research fellows, and external consultants to provide technical assistance and conduct innovative policing research. Its activities are directed at law enforcement agencies and policymakers seeking evidence-based approaches to enhance policing outcomes. The organization focuses on applied research and practical support to policing efforts. A notable development in recent years is Denver’s 2023 partnership to evaluate the impact of the Institute’s work in the city.
