Powers Studio, based in San Jose, California, has operated a studio and workshop since 1958, beginning as a painter's practice before expanding into mosaic and, later, plastic-based work. The artist emerged as an early adopter of plastic materials in Northern California, producing a substantial body of work and mounting solo exhibitions in both San Francisco and New York in 1972. After a serious illness in the late 1970s and subsequent surgery, the practice shifted away from acrylics toward bronze casting, which the artist has continued to pursue. The studio has also pursued the integration of art with architecture, creating works in concrete, mosaic, and metal that are designed to be placed within their architectural hosts. 

The practice includes a long tenure as Coordinator of Spatial Arts at San Jose State University, where the artist taught drawing, sculpture (with an emphasis on metal), and graduate seminars for many years, and held artist-in-residence terms in Australia and France. Lynn, the artist's wife, is a painter with an adjoining studio, indicating a shared studio environment.
