The mission of Prosecutors’ Center for Excellence is to work with prosecutors to improve the criminal justice system and to address emerging issues. The criminal justice system is undergoing a revolution of change and introspection fueled by the realization that wrongful convictions can occur and that the trust between the community and law enforcement has eroded. These issues are of profound importance to prosecutors who are so central to the criminal justice system. Prosecutors, who have an ethical duty to protect public safety as well as the rights of the accused, must keep abreast of the rapid changes in the criminal justice system and the ever-increasing flow of recommendations, studies and opinions. Their insights, experience and leadership are essential to the implementation of lasting, effective change. Prosecutors’ Center of Excellence will assist prosecutors with these challenges. A core mission of Prosecutors’ Center for Excellence is to develop and support statewide Best Practices Committees for prosecutors. These non-partisan committees, which consist of prosecutors from all regions of a state, provide a process for prosecutors to proactively address the issues of the day and to strive to improve the criminal justice system. Prosecutors’ Center for Excellence provides technical assistance, training, materials, expert advice, and research on policy issues relevant to the work of these committees. Prosecutors Center for Excellence also facilitates the sharing of information between Best Practices Committees and between individual prosecutors. It creates a place where prosecutors can exchange ideas and share solutions to difficult issues. Prosecutors’ Center for Excellence also collaborates with criminal justice partners, academics and researchers to initiate and review proposals for reforms in the criminal justice system.
