PBS is a private nonprofit organization founded in 1969 that coordinates a network of more than 350 local public noncommercial television stations, headquartered in Arlington, Virginia. It serves audiences across all 50 states and U.S. territories, reaching more than 120 million people each month via on-air and online content. The organization oversees program acquisition, distribution and promotion, education services, new media ventures, fundraising support, engineering and technology development, and video marketing. Its customers are the participating public television stations and the broad audiences they serve nationwide, with PBS acting as a backbone for public service programming. In June 2026, PBS NewsHour released a four-part docu-series, Once Upon a Time in Space, illustrating ongoing program development.
