Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death not only in the United States, but also worldwide. It claims a person’s life every 5 seconds, leading to over 6 million deaths annually. 

SCA is caused by ventricular fibrillation. This is when the electrical signals that regulate the heart beat suddenly and with little warning, go haywire. This prevents the heart from effectively pumping blood to the brain & body and a loss of consciousness can result immediately. Without the assistance of a nearby bystander, death can occur within 10 minutes and the only way to treat SCA is through defibrillation. 

Globally, the survival rate of out of hospital SCA is about 1%. While the survival rate in the United States is higher at 7%, rates greater than 50% have been proven to be within reach with well managed Automated External Defibrillator (AED) programs.
