Retreat Farm is a small nonprofit based in Brattleboro, in southern Vermont, that manages a historic property spanning more than 500 acres of conserved forests, farmlands, trails, and waterways. It aims to cultivate a just, healthy, and sustainable community by leveraging its land, programs, and partnerships to connect people with the land and with one another, underscoring the idea that the relationship between people and the land underpins health, sustenance, and inspiration. The site sits on traditional Abenaki homelands and features a 19th-century Farmstead situated where the West and Connecticut Rivers meet, set within wooded hills and farmland. Founded at this location in 1837 to provide food, fuel, and occupational therapy to patients and staff of the Brattleboro Retreat psychiatric hospital, the site was reestablished as an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit in 2015 to restore the forests, soils, waters, and farmstead as a community asset. Today, Retreat Farm provides access to fresh food, opportunities to connect with nature, and community for thousands of visitors, contributing to the region's vibrancy by bringing people together around shared land and landscape.
