The Roman Catholic Diocese of Helena functions as a regional ecclesiastical authority within the Catholic Church, serving western and north central Montana. It administers a network of 57 parishes and 38 missions, organized into six deaneries that include Bozeman, Butte, Conrad, Helena, Kalispell, and Missoula. The diocesan church is the Cathedral of St. Helena in Helena, dedicated in 1914, and its administrative offices have occupied a property purchased in 1981 for diocesan use. Established in 1884, the diocese originally encompassed the entire state, with its current boundaries formed in 1904 after the Diocese of Great Falls (now Great Falls-Billings) was created. It covers about 51,922 square miles across 21 counties and portions of two others, serving the local Catholic community and its parishes and missions through religious and community programs.
