Samueli Institute is a non-profit research organization and think tank dedicated to examining the safety, effectiveness, and integration of healing-oriented approaches within medical care. Based in Alexandria, Virginia, the institute conducts studies on natural products, nutrition and lifestyle, and mind–body practices, as well as traditional and complementary therapies such as acupuncture, manual therapy, and yoga, including consideration of the placebo effect in treatment outcomes. Its research programs span integrative medicine, chronic pain, the role of the brain and mind in healing, health research and education, optimal healing environments, health care policy, and military and veterans health care. It provides consultation and evaluation services to help health care organizations improve chronic pain care, design healing-oriented environments, and implement evidence-based integrative practices for patients and employees. As a small to mid-sized nonprofit think tank, its work engages health systems, clinicians, policymakers, and veterans health programs seeking to advance holistic approaches to care.
