We often think about food in terms of individual choices, family celebrations, and our cultural heritage. Over 460,000 San Diegans (1 in 7), however, have a relationship with food that is dominated by scarcity. These households—including families with children, veterans and military families, and senior citizens—do not always have access to enough food for an active healthy life. Why? Because of what they earn, where they live, or other gaps in our food system. San Diego Hunger Coalition leads collaborative action to end hunger in San Diego County supported by research, education, and advocacy. We believe in a Hunger Free San Diego where anyone who needs food assistance can get it in a timely, dignified, and adequate manner. To achieve our goals, San Diego Hunger Coalition leads four initiatives: Hunger Free San Diego, facilitated by the Hunger Coalition, brings together local hunger relief leaders from all sectors to align activities and missions, collaborate on research, and design an interconnected network of hunger relief to better serve our communities. Hunger Free Kids provides free, hands-on assistance and ongoing guidance to any person, school, district, or organizations who wants to end hunger. The program brings together leading voices in child nutrition to develop, sustain, and support hunger relief programs that are proven, effective, and evidence-based. Hunger Free with CalFresh works with community organizations to provide CalFresh application assistance and resources to make the sometimes difficult process easy and accessible to every San Diegan in need. The program provides tools, guidance, and raises awareness of our most powerful and dignified hunger relief program: CalFresh/SNAP. Hunger Advocacy Network (HAN) brings together the region's heavy hitters in the hunger relief sector to advocate for lasting, systemic change and to create a government that works for all of our residents. HAN encourages San Diegans to get active and get vocal!
