Sapiens Steering Brain Stimulation (Sapiens SBS), is now called Medtronic Eindhoven Design Center (MEDC), a global Medtronic Neuromodulation research and development center. It is based at Eindhoven High Tech Campus in the Netherlands. The mission of the fifty plus now MEDC employees remains the same: to bring the innovative concept of Steering Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) to more patients who can benefit from this advanced treatment for degenerative or functional brain disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease, dystonia and other currently emerging indications. MEDC’s ambition, as a crucial R&D asset within the global Neuromodulation business of Medtronic, is to improve the therapeutic efficacy of neuromodulation therapies, to shorten and simplify the involved clinical procedures, and to improve patient comfort. Sapiens SBS was founded in 2011 as a spin-out of Royal Philips; after being backed by strong venture capital support in its first years, it was acquired by Medtronic in August 2014.
