Sapienza Università di Roma is a research-focused higher education institution based in Rome, Lazio, Italy, with more than 10,000 employees. Founded in 1303 by Pope Boniface VIII, it is one of the oldest universities and has historically contributed to Italian and European science and culture. The main campus, opened in 1935 and designed by Marcello Piacentini, is the largest in Europe and functions as a self-contained campus with libraries, museums, and student services; there are additional decentralized campuses in Lazio. The university comprises 63 Departments and 11 Faculties, offering degree programs, PhD courses, 1–2 year professional courses, and Specialization Schools, with the School for Advanced Studies inaugurated in 2011–2012 to promote merit-based learning. It supports international exchange and research collaboration, hosting over 1,100 incoming and outgoing exchange students annually, and has partnerships and spin-offs such as IMBUED (launched in 2026) and collaborations with Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
