SAPREF is a joint venture between Shell SA Refining and BP Southern Africa, operating a major crude oil refinery in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. It is the largest refinery in Southern Africa, accounting for a significant share of the region's refining capacity, and it processes about 24,000 tons of crude daily to yield 10 main products across 46 grades. The facility serves the South African energy market, producing about 2.7 billion litres of petrol each year, enough to power roughly 800,000 cars worldwide. It operates at high temperatures and pressures typical of refining, supported by an extensive pipeline network. In May 2024 SAPREF announced the sale of assets to the CEF Group, reflecting a notable development in its asset portfolio. The operation is large, employing a substantial workforce along with contractors to run the refinery.
