The Seattle Aquarium is a nonprofit organization in the Museums, Historical Sites, and Zoos sector, focused on Earth's one ocean. Its mission, Inspiring Conservation of Our Marine Environment, guides activities from animal care to conservation education, research, and policy and advocacy work. It is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, and its campus on Seattle's central waterfront, Washington, comprises three buildings—Piers 59 and 60 and the Ocean Pavilion, opened in 2024 with a Coral Triangle focus. The Aquarium serves the public and school groups through conservation education, public programs, and related research and advocacy work. It ranks among the top regional attractions, ninth in the U.S. by attendance and within the Puget Sound's top five paid attractions, and has hosted over 27 million visitors while educating over two million schoolchildren since opening. The Ocean Pavilion expansion, opened in 2024, underscores biodiversity in the Coral Triangle, and the organization is based in Seattle as a mid-sized nonprofit focused on marine conservation and public engagement.
