SMU is a higher education institution based in Medunsa, Gauteng, South Africa, with a focus on health sciences. It was established as a distinct university when the government promulgated the Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University in the Government Gazette on 16 May 2014, following a 2011 decision to separate the Medunsa Campus from the University of Limpopo. The formation drew on findings from a task team led by Prof Malegapuru Makgoba and Dr Max Price to guide the transition from the former campus to a stand-alone university. 

SMU conducts teaching and research in its fields and pursues knowledge transfer and community engagement as part of its academic mission. Recent activity includes hosting research-focused events, such as a workshop on optimal control and optimization, and organizing a World IP Day workshop through its Technology Transfer Office, underscoring an emphasis on innovation and collaboration. The university also explores partnerships with industry, exemplified by its engagement with Sasol, and participates in broader initiatives aimed at transformation and expanding access through historically disadvantaged institutions.
