Shared Capital Cooperative is a national loan fund and federally certified Community Development Financial Institution (CDFI) based in Saint Paul, Minnesota. Since its founding in 1978, the cooperative has provided thousands of loans to cooperatives and housing initiatives across the United States, totaling more than $50 million in financing for over 260 member cooperatives in more than 35 states. The organization operates as a democratically governed cooperative, owned by its members, who participate directly in linking cooperative enterprises with capital through borrowing and investing in the fund. Its mission centers on fostering economic democracy by supporting cooperative ownership and wealth-building in low-income and economically disadvantaged communities. In addition to member engagement, Shared Capital also attracts investments from social investors who align with its mission. A notable development includes recent financing activity, such as an $850,000 loan to the Pilsen Housing Cooperative in Chicago, reflecting ongoing work to support housing cooperatives nationwide.
