Dr. Robert Rodvien practiced medical hematology, oncology, and AIDS medicine for over 40 years in San Francisco. He emphasized the education of patients with the goal of diminishing their anxiety. When his wife passed away from cancer, Dr. Rodvien and his son, Brian, founded Smarter Medical Care, a company dedicated to helping people better understand their illnesses. “ My mother’s illness went through several phases: first she was told of the cancer, then she experienced symptoms caused by her surgery and chemotherapy, and only at the end was she ill from the cancer,” company CEO Brian Rodvien observes. “During all these phases, however, my father was able to tell her what was going on, in terms she understood. Therefore, she was worried about her condition, but was not overwhelmed by it.” Brian and his father form an excellent team to help people with serious illness. Brian is an accomplished video producer and musician, with a degree in Cognitive Science. These skills, along with his experiences with family illness, help him understand what patients need from a vantage point that complements his father’s medical perspective.
