The Société des Eaux de Marseille (SEM) is an environmental services provider based in Marseille with a history spanning more than eight decades. It delivers comprehensive water and sanitation services to about 1.5 million people in the Provence region, managing the full cycle from intake and production of potable water to distribution and wastewater collection. The company operates for the Aix-Marseille-Provence Metropolis, maintaining notable infrastructure such as the canal of Marseille, and works with around a hundred partner organizations including local authorities and industrial clients. SEM coordinates activities across more than 60 communes and emphasizes preserving resources by managing water use, energy consumption, and network efficiency, alongside maintenance, emergency response, and safety duties. The organization is structured through several entities, including SEMM, SAEM, SAOM, and subsidiaries such as VIVAIGO, BIOTECHNA, and SOMEI, and is based in the Marseille region; a recent development noted is the January 2024 announcement that the Butec Group acquired SEM's Moroccan businesses.
