The Society of Occupational Medicine is a registered charity based in London that aims to improve the health of the working-age population across the UK. It is a national leader in continuing professional development and education for occupational health practitioners, and it publishes an international peer-reviewed journal, Occupational Medicine. It also serves as a forum for exchange of ideas, resources, best practice, and networking, with ten regional groups that organize events and discussions. From its head office, SOM delivers national training and development courses and offers a quality-assured appraisal scheme to support re-validation. It distributes the Occupational Medicine journal and a monthly newsletter with policy and practice updates. A recent development includes a partnership with Lungs at Work to develop an information document on silicosis from artificial or engineered stone.
