The Society of St. Vincent de Paul – Detroit is the local arm of a Catholic lay organization that mobilizes about 700,000 volunteers to help people living in poverty. It is described as the largest social assistance organization in the world. In Detroit, it offers a range of programs including home visits, housing assistance, disaster relief, job training and placement, food pantries, and clothing and utility assistance. It works in partnership with the Archdiocese of Detroit and coordinates a volunteer network of about 2,000 Vincentians across Wayne, Oakland, Macomb, Lapeer, St. Clair and Monroe counties, assisting around 30,000 local households annually. Thrift stores in southeast Michigan support the society's charitable operations, including emergency food centers, youth summer camps, and social services housed at the Van Elslander Family Center.
