If you are passionate about music, I founded Songdog Music for you. *This holds if all you want to do is: Listen. Listening is better when it is active, engaged. Love music? Learn even the basics of active listening and you will become deeper in love. *This holds if you really wanna play an instrument: Just play it. You may have been talked out of it, shamed out of it, psyched out of it, by yourself or others: these are all lies. You can do it. *This holds if like me, you are an experienced practitioner of music: we are siblings. You know what I mean, I am sure of it. Anyone who carries an instrument case, performs on a stage, or offers to help others learn our art, has heard the sorrowful stories of others who never dared to, or did, for a moment, and then gave up. Music skills are not one bit different from any other field of human endeavor and they can be learned in exactly the same ways. How I break it down: SCIENCE: music is logical, it makes sense. Simply define your terminology, clearly show structures and relationships, and apply problem-solving skills and voilà, the whole thing is demystified. SPORT: music is physical. To play music our bodies interact with an instrument (singing, clapping, beatboxing ….. our body IS the instrument). Like any sport, athletic pursuit, craft or anything, music tasks make sense. We can break them down into components small enough to learn, and put it all back together for a song. LANGUAGE: music is artistic communication through the language of sound. Learn to spell music, learn music vocabulary (pitch, rhythm, volume, …), learn musical syntax and structure. The more skill you develop in these, the more expression comes out of your instrument. All of us, when we first emerge from the dark-warm-cozy, utter a cry. What is that if not a song? Music. It’s a sublime human expression, and I see all of the vast corpus of music in the world as related to that. You are welcome to come and extrapolate with me!
