Its origins trace back to 1950, when a small group of employees from the North West Leather Company, known as the Ole Tannery, formed a credit union. It was reorganized as Soo Co-op Credit Union on November 17, 1958 with sponsorship from the Soo Cooperative Company, and restructured again after the sponsor ceased operations in 2015. Membership is open to individuals in Michigan who live, own real estate, work, worship, or are educated in the state, along with their immediate relatives.
