Based in Columbia, South Carolina, the South Carolina State Museum functions as a mid-sized cultural institution within the museums, historical sites, and zoos sector. Opened in 1988, it operates in the historic Columbia Mills Building and focuses on collecting, preserving and presenting the state's culture, art, natural history, technology and innovation. The museum houses a collection of more than 1.1 million objects and offers four floors of exhibitions that explore Palmetto State heritage. Its primary audience includes residents and students from across South Carolina, with educational environments designed to entertain, inspire and enrich visitors. The institution has pursued digitization initiatives, and in 2025 appointed Mary Kathryne Wadford as executive director.
