The Southland District Council is the local government authority responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Southland District, excluding Gore and Invercargill, and is based in Richmond in the Southland region of New Zealand. It oversees essential municipal services spanning water supply, wastewater and stormwater systems, rubbish collection, animal control, cemeteries, environmental health, libraries, parks and reserves, and roading. In addition, the council delivers regulatory functions such as building control and resource management to maintain standards and protect the environment. The council serves a region of roughly 31,000 square kilometres with a population just over 29,000, supporting diverse urban and rural communities.
