SPAR South Africa operates a network of SPAR-branded retail stores and a nationwide distribution backbone across Southern Africa. The group's distribution footprint includes six distribution centers, a Build It center for building materials, and a S BUYS pharmaceutical distribution center, enabling its stores to source a broad range of goods. The company is based in Pinetown, KwaZulu-Natal. The SPAR concept began in the 1960s when eight wholesalers were granted exclusive rights to the SPAR name in 1963 and began servicing about 500 small retailers. Over time, it expanded through acquisitions and organic growth to supply thousands of stores across Southern Africa. In March 2026, Reeza Isaacs, previously the group’s chief financial officer, was appointed as group chief executive officer.
