Special Olympics Illinois is a not-for-profit organization based in Normal, Illinois, at 605 East Willow Street, Normal, IL 61761. It provides year-round training and competition in 18 sports for more than 23,000 athletes with intellectual disabilities, and supports over 13,000 Young Athletes ages 2-7 with and without intellectual disabilities. The organization does not charge athletes or their families to participate. The broader Special Olympics movement began in Illinois with the first games at Soldier Field in July 1968, and today includes more than 4.5 million athletes across 170 countries. Its mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving participants opportunities to develop physical fitness, courage, joy, and friendship with families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the broader community.
