Founded in 1881, the Staten Island Museum serves Staten Island as New York City’s only general-interest museum. It hosts interdisciplinary exhibitions and educational programs that link natural science, art, and history, drawing on its diverse collections. The museum seeks to make its current and future holdings accessible to educators, students, researchers, and the general public through authentic experiences in the field and at the museum. Its origins trace to 1881 when a group of naturalists pooled their collections to record local biodiversity and advocate for environmental preservation. In 2015 the institution opened a new facility at Snug Harbor with expanded space for art and natural science objects, and in 2023 it launched the Vulnerable Landscapes exhibit to broaden its programming.
