Statens Serum Institut (SSI) is a Danish government-related research organization under the Ministry of Interior and Health, located at 5 Artillerivej in Copenhagen. The institute operates in the research services industry and employs between 1,001 and 5,000 people. Its mission is to prevent and combat infectious and congenital diseases through research, surveillance, diagnostics, and advisory activities. SSI comprises divisions such as Infektionsberedskab, which is responsible for Denmark’s infectious disease preparedness, monitors diseases domestically and through international collaborations, and provides guidance to health professionals and policymakers, including establishing diagnostics for new or rare diseases. The organization also runs Denmark’s National Biobank, conducts newborn screening for 25 severe diseases, and pursues epidemiological and vaccine research as part of its two main research areas. In recent years, SSI has engaged in international partnerships with universities and other institutions to develop a platform aimed at strengthening global pandemic preparedness.
