Based in Columbus, Montana, Stillwater Mining Company operates the US PGM Montana operations, which comprise the Stillwater Mine, East Boulder Mine, and the nearby Metallurgical Complex, where platinum group metals are extracted and processed from the J-M Reef. The operations represent the United States’ only significant source of PGMs and host what is described as the highest-grade PGM deposit in the world. The mines have been in operation for more than 35 years and are positioned for long-term activity. Production from these operations is dominated by palladium, with platinum comprising the remainder. The Metallurgical Complex smelts mined material to produce a PGM-rich product and recycles automotive catalysts to recover PGMs. Recent reporting indicates the Stillwater Mine expanded its workforce by about 150 positions in the past year, signaling ongoing activity at the site.
