The Supreme Court of Texas is the court of last resort for civil matters in Texas, comprised of a Chief Justice and eight Justices. The justices are elected in state-wide elections to staggered six-year terms, with vacancies filled by the Governor subject to Senate confirmation. To serve on the court, a candidate must be at least 35 years old, a Texas citizen, licensed to practice law in Texas, and have at least ten years of legal experience (either as a lawyer, or as a lawyer and judge of a court of record). The court is based in Austin, Texas. In addition to deciding civil appeals, the court holds administrative authority over the State Bar of Texas and licenses attorneys, including appointing the Board of Law Examiners to administer the bar examination. It promulgates the core procedural rules used by Texas courts—such as the Texas Rules of Civil Procedure, Rules of Appellate Procedure, and Rules of Evidence—within the Administration of Justice.
