The Big Lift

The Big Lift is a non-profit community service project that started at the University of Technology Sydney in 2010. Its first trip lasted eight days during a mid-year break, with about forty UTS students traveling by bus through New South Wales and Queensland to assist six towns and their under-resourced community organisations. Working with locals, participants carried out projects such as land restoration, construction, and gardening, sharing meals and lodging in community spaces.

The program aims to deliver a meaningful, lasting impact on the communities it visits while developing participants' initiative, teamwork, and leadership. It has expanded the trip to include two buses in July and is based in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, with a small team and a central website at biglift.org.
