The BUILD Initiative operates as a national effort focused on strengthening state-level early childhood systems. By coordinating leaders across family support, early learning, health, mental health, nutrition, and related areas, it aims to connect services and programs that often operate in isolation, thereby promoting healthy development and preparedness for school from birth through age five.
Based in Boston, Massachusetts, the organization works with state-based entities, innovators, business and government partners to help states develop policies, services, and advocacy around early childhood. Its work targets state policymakers and system leaders responsible for building integrated supports for young children and their families, addressing disparities and underinvestment in the first years of life. A recent development includes appointing an interim director of state services, reflecting ongoing expansion of its state-facing leadership capacity.
