The mission of The DOME Project is to assist young people who are economically, socially, and academically challenged to focus on their education as a means to success. The DOME, an acronym for Developing Opportunities through Meaningful Education, was founded in 1973 as an alternative school program to address the challenges faced by young people who had fallen through the cracks of the traditional school system. Today, the DOME is a multi-faceted youth organization operating free programs for at-risk and disadvantaged New York City youth. The DOME Project has three core programs: In partnership with New York City public high schools and community-based organizations, the College Access Initiative helps high school students get into college by guiding them through the entire process from tutoring to test preparation, college trips, college applications, and financial aid. Bridge to Success is an alternative-to-detention after-school program that offers a range of advocacy, support, and youth development opportunities for underserved and at-risk youth ages 13 through 19 involved in the juvenile and adult criminal justice systems. The West Side Neighborhood Commons is a new venture of the DOME in partnership with the New York City Housing Authority and Strycker’s Bay Neighborhood Council at the DeHostos Community Center located on the Upper West Side, which serves as a hub for comprehensive academic support and expanded learning opportunities for children and youth from the local community.
