The Gotham Film & Media Institute is a not-for-profit organization based in Brooklyn, New York, founded in 1979 as the Independent Filmmaker Project (IFP). It supports the future of storytelling in film, video, and sound by identifying, developing, and celebrating the people and projects that shape narrative, offering resources at every stage of a project. It develops about 350 fiction and nonfiction works each year and has supported more than 10,000 projects and over 30,000 filmmakers. Its activities include narrative and documentary labs, Gotham Week's Project Forum, and year-round public programming such as Filmmaker Magazine, Gotham Week, the Gotham Awards, and Gotham Labs, along with the Gotham EDU virtual internship program developed with higher education partners. The Gotham emphasizes inclusive opportunities for diverse voices across many perspectives, and recent developments include a January 2026 partnership with Sundance Institute to establish interconnected programs.
