The Green Project is a non-profit building supply resale and salvage store located in the St. Roch/Bywater area of New Orleans. Our mission is to develop a culture of creative reuse by building a marketplace for reclaimed materials and cultivating a respect for their value. We do this by accepting people's used building materials and unwanted excess paint, and selling it back to the community at low cost. In doing so, we make it possible for all New Orleans homeowners - regardless of income - to rebuild and maintain their homes while reducing waste in our city. One of our goals is to provide these necessary materials to the residents of the Greater New Orleans area at prices they can afford, but our main purpose is an environmental one. We exist to keep materials out of our landfills and paint out of our water. Each year, The Green Project diverts 2,050 tons (4.1 million pounds) of building materials out of local landfills. Our paint recycling program annually takes over 40,000 gallons of paint out of the waste stream, most of which is recycled and sold back to the community at less than $10 per gallon. We also have an environmental education program through which we educate children as well as adults about the problems that exist in our environment, and how each individual can make simple changes to correct those problems.
