The Gretchen S. Vapnar Community Crisis Center, based in Elgin, Illinois, was founded in 1975 by volunteers to address crisis-related needs for individuals and families. It serves people dealing with domestic violence, sexual assault, or economic hardship, and stands as one of the state's oldest domestic violence shelters. Its service area covers northern Kane County from St. Charles to the county's northern edge and the far northwest suburban Cook County, with no service limits for domestic violence victims. In October 2025, the Elgin Development Group partnered with the Community Crisis Center to educate students about healthy relationships and warning signs of abuse.
