The Sharing Community began in 1983 as a coordinated effort by community and faith groups to address the rise of poverty and homelessness in southwest Yonkers. It started with a community-based soup kitchen and homeless shelter operating in space borrowed from local churches. Since becoming an independent nonprofit in 1984, it has expanded its services beyond meals to meet evolving needs in the southwest Yonkers communities. Today, the organization offers permanent and transitional housing, substance abuse harm-reduction counseling, HIV/AIDS counseling and testing, prevention education, case management, nutritional support services, and peer support groups. In collaboration with neighborhood institutions, it also operates on-site health and mental health clinics. Its central service center at 1 Hudson Street provides a comprehensive suite of services, including food, eviction prevention, and health and mental health services.
