The Wilderness Society (TWS) is a United States-based non-profit conservation organization focused on protecting wild places and public lands to benefit local communities, wildlife, and the climate. Founded in 1935, it has grown to include more than one million members and supporters and has contributed to the permanent protection of 111 million acres of wilderness and to the sound management of public lands. The organization is headquartered in Washington, DC, at 1801 Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest, Suite 200. It pursues four major impact goals: protecting 30 percent of America’s lands and waters by 2030; transitioning off fossil fuel development on public lands to well-sited renewable energy; securing equitable access to public lands and their benefits; and building broad support for conservation. The Wilderness Society recognizes injustices affecting Indigenous peoples and engages directly with Tribal Nations and Indigenous communities to advance conservation outcomes that reflect Indigenous priorities, and it employs between 201 and 500 staff.
