Tzu Chi USA is the first chapter of the Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation outside Taiwan and operates as a volunteer-based international non-governmental organization founded in 1989 in Alhambra, California. It extends the foundation's humanitarian work across the United States through a network of offices and facilities. The organization is based in San Dimas, California, and its programs cover community and social services, disaster relief, medical aid, education, environmental protection, and a bone marrow donor registry. Tzu Chi USA emphasizes humanistic values and volunteerism as central to its activities, collaborating with a range of local and international partners. In early 2023 it launched Turkey Earthquake Relief to fund relief items such as eco-blankets, gift cards, and basic necessities. The organization has engaged in partnerships at the local level, including with West Valley Community Services in Cupertino, and with international health and disaster-relief groups such as the Sierra Leone Red Cross and International Community Health Services.
