Founded in 1949 as United Cerebral Palsy Association of Metropolitan Detroit, UCP/Detroit is one of over 100 independent, state and local non-profit affiliates and is the leading source of information on cerebral palsy and a leading advocate for the rights of all people with disabilities. MISSION The mission of United Cerebral Palsy of Metropolitan Detroit (UCP/Detroit) is to advance the independence of all people with cerebral palsy and other disabilities while supporting their right to self-determination and inclusion through programs that focus on person centered advocacy, employment, assistive technology and independence. PHILOSOPHY UCP/Detroit believes strongly in the right to self determination and independence for all persons regardless of any physical, mental or emotional limitation that society calls a "disability." UCP/Detroit views independence as a relative term, as we are all interdependent on one another. Without others, it is impossible to succeed, and it is our attitude towards others that determines their attitudes. Thus, no independence or empowerment can be achieved without the expectation and belief that it is possible.
