United Solar Initiative is a 501c3 nonprofit based in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, dedicated to expanding solar energy access for communities lacking reliable electricity. The organization collaborates with international nonprofit partners to address education, healthcare, and water needs through clean energy projects. In the United States, USI has experience installing solar systems on community centers and homes in lower-income neighborhoods. USI promotes distributed solar generation as a means to bypass traditional grid dependence in emerging economies, installing solar panels that provide lighting, water pumping, and other essential electrical needs. It operates with a cooperative advancement model aimed at strengthening local solar companies by coordinating with partner firms and corporate donors, thereby expanding energy access in areas with little or no prior electricity and a developing solar sector. A recent development is a partnership with Schneider Electric to install microgrids at maternal healthcare clinics in Guatemala.
