The United States Courts administers the federal judiciary from courthouses across the nation, with a mandate to safeguard constitutional rights and secure equal justice under the law. Its workforce covers a broad spectrum of roles—from judges and court clerks to federal public defenders, law clerks, probation and pretrial officers, technology specialists, and administrative staff—working to support the system's mission.
The courts resolve civil disputes, decide criminal cases under federal law, assist individuals and businesses unable to pay debts, and conduct naturalization ceremonies for new citizens. The U.S. Courts System comprises the Supreme Court; 13 Courts of Appeals; 94 U.S. District Courts (including Bankruptcy Courts); probation and pretrial offices; Federal Public Defenders Offices; and several support agencies such as the Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts, the Federal Judicial Center, and the U.S. Sentencing Commission. Based in Washington, D.C., the federal judiciary has recently pursued the development of a system for record-keeping and electronic filing under the Open Courts Act.
