United States Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) is a Unified Combatant Command within the U.S. Department of Defense, tasked with contingency planning, operations, and security cooperation across the Americas. It covers Central and South America, the Caribbean, and their territorial waters, and is responsible for safeguarding U.S. military assets deployed there. The command also oversees the defense of the Panama Canal and the canal area. Based in Doral, Florida, in the Greater Miami area, SOUTHCOM collaborates with partner nations and U.S. government elements to advance regional security objectives. The command sustains a workforce in the low hundreds, reflecting its size within the armed forces. A notable recent development is the activation of Space Forces Southern (SPACEFOR-SOUTH) in January 2026, which formalized the integration of space capabilities across the Western Hemisphere.
