Mission: To engage the community in making a meaningful difference to improve people's lives. The United Way of Southern Maryland (UWSOMD) is an independent, separately incorporated organization governed by local volunteers who serve only Southern Maryland. Rather than put a Band-aid on local issues, UWSOMD aims to make a larger impact by addressing the root causes of poverty in our community. Starting as a fundraising organization supporting six agencies, UWSOMD has evolved to a community builder, putting all its resources behind programs and initiatives that address education, income and health - because these are the building blocks for a good life. Major community building efforts include managing multiple grants and designations for over thirty partner agencies, recruiting over 300 community volunteers annually, referring people to community resources and 2-1-1, and leading advocacy efforts through local Impact Councils.
